I went to Publix this morning to pick up just two items very quickly. I had the younger three kids while my husband stayed home with our oldest because he (the 10yr old) just loves to make pancakes on Saturday mornings. So, it’s me and three little ones at the store.
I walked by the dairy case and saw that the brand name sour cream was “buy 1 get 1 free”. At that price, it was cheaper than the off-brand, so I picked up two of them. On our way out of the store, I looked at the receipt and noticed that the sour cream did not ring up under the sale price, I was charged for both containers.
It amounted to $1.59 before taxes – what would you have done? Would you have gone back in and gotten the $1.59 back or just gotten on home to eat breakfast?

I ALWAYS go back and get it fixed. That means no matter if they overcharged me OR if they undercharged me. If I’m aware of an error, I go back and get it fixed.
On the overcharging – never let that go. Even if you say to yourself “Oh it’s only $1.50″ or whatever, think of how many others will sell all day long and maybe all week long at that price and how many people will be ripped off behind you unless you straighten it out.
And here’s the real dig – even when you complain, they give you back YOUR amount, but that doesn’t fix the computer.
You have to be diligent and you have to step up and kindly but firmly make those corrections.
I agree with Earthmom on principle and almost entirely – unless I’ve left the store, and the time, gas and exhausted kids involved are worth more than the amount I’m being ripped off…. but yeah, if I’m right there, haven’t left the parking lot yet, I go right back in there.
I think I was just being too lazy and justified that it was *only* $1.59 – but $1.59 is more than half way to a gallon of milk! I shouldn’t be lazy with even a small amount.
…mind you, not with the “I’m being ripped off!!” attitude! LOL… I always assume it was just a mistake, and I just go point out the mistake, they fix it, and we all go on our merry way.
I agree! I’m sure it was a complete mistake!
Yeah you should definitely let them know and get your money back! That’s why you grabbed that kind! Besides I’m sure they’ll be very nice about it.
I do love shopping at Publix for that very reason – they are always so nice! The cashier was very sweet and I’m sure it would have been no problem!
I would get (and have gotten) my money refunded.
Definitely depends on the day… sometimes time is worth $1.59. If I had time, though, I would probably go back. As others have said, I know Publix would be great (and apologetic to boot) about it!
If we are not all strapped in the car seat…we go back. I always pause after the check-out and check the receipt. I have a family of 7..every cent matters, but sometimes the energy it took to carry the 35lb baby back in the store is worth the $1.59. Just remember if you caught this mistake..how many others are there when you are shopping for a lot of groceries. I am a big bargain shopper and I really pay attention at the checkout. Sometimes if you are a frequent shopper…they will correct it the next time you come in.
Roberta – I had the 20+lb baby in the sling on my back!
I was thinking that since it was an advertised sale, that might take the receipt back in and see if they’ll correct it on my next shopping trip.
I probably would have gone back in, but I don’t have kids yet
I do it based on principle and money. If I couldn’t go back in that day, I probably would have called when I got home and brought my receipt back at a later date. That is what I did when Wal-mart recently double charged me
I often shop with 5 kids – ages 9 and under. Plus, I’ve started couponing, which increases mistakes by a lot – both over- and undercharging. I decided to take an average approach. I chose a dollar amount (mine is $5, since I do big grocery trips all at once $100+ at a time) and anytime they over- or undercharge me, and it’s less than $5 – I don’t do anything about it. I did keep track to start with to make sure it averaged out, and it came pretty close. This may not work for everyone, but I had to find a solution when I found myself standing in line at customer service every other grocery trip with tired children. That being said, my mistakes are usually coupon errors, scanning one twice, forgeting to scan one that was stuck together, etc.
