My 4yr old wanted to learn how to read when she was 3 1/2, so we started “Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons“.  Because the 3yr old saw the 4yr old doing it, then of course he wanted to as well!  So, big brother plays with the baby (it is the most sought-after time in the day for him, his biggest reward for staying on track!) while I do the reading lessons with the preschoolers.

My preschoolers don’t always take naps, but they always read in bed during nap time.  More often than not, they do fall asleep and I can tell by 5:30 the days that they did not sleep.  This is the time that I get some one-on-one with my oldest to reinforce what he is learning about.  We go through each subject, some additional multiplication memorization and some speech practicing.  Then, I get some time to plan the preschool lessons for the next day and make any phone calls or other administrative duties.

Can you see how this schedule makes my life so much less chaotic?  The things that are most important to me are actually getting DONE instead of feeling guilty about how much is UNDONE!

During chore time, my focus is to train the children on how to do several tasks around the house and to make helping out second-nature for them.  I originally had designated a certain area of the house to cover each day: Kitchen on Monday, Living Room on Tuesday, Bathrooms on Wednesday, Bedrooms on Thursday, Outside on Friday.  But, sometimes, Thursday would come and the bedrooms really didn’t need any attention because we’d been on schedule all week, but the kitchen had an “issue”.  So, now I just know what parts of the house need special attention on any given day and when it’s chore time, I let the kids know what we’ll be working on.  There are pros and cons to doing it that way – you’ll have to figure out which way works for your family.

Everyone has a “before dinner” and an “after dinner” chore.  By dinner time, I’m pretty tired and I can really use the help to get the biggest meal of the day on the table.  It is the one meal my husband gets to share with us, so I want it to be really special.

As you can see, we have lots of time set aside for reading throughout the day.  There are very few hours that pass when someone does not have a book in their hands.  I think that books teach children so many wonderful things and I want them to love learning!  They love going to the library and it seems they can’t get enough “book time” either, so this works for us.

I have really enjoyed writing all this out for you!  It makes me tidy up any areas of the actual implementation of this schedule that maybe were starting to lack a little.  Above all, I hope it has helped you find some places in your day that could be scheduled a little better and maybe given you some ideas on what to do!

That’s all for now!  Please feel free to post comments and questions!  Until next time, keep on growing!!
