Make-Do Monday: Waterbed Bookshelf

Make-Do MondaysAnd, rushing in at the last moment before the bell rings for class, is HomeGrownMommy to participate in this week’s Make-Do Monday!  MDM is hosted by AnnKroker every Monday.

I planned on hitting the keyboard much earlier today, but my children are way too cute to say “no” to!!  :)   Especially when they ask for just one more book!

Do you have enough bookshelves?

Do you know anyone who has enough bookshelves?

Me either!

We all love to devour information at this house and so we have stacks of books double lining our shelves!  I know it’s the same for other families, homeschooling or not!

So, we are always on the lookout for more bookshelves.  Many of the shelves I have were made by my husband – it’s wonderful to be in love with a carpenter!  (and, not just because he looks so cute wearing those tool-pouches!)

One of the things he has used to make a shelf out of for me was a waterbed frame that I was very attached to.  When my father passed away nearly eight years ago, he had the waterbed frame from the bed he and my mom purchased in 1979 or 1980 … somewhere in there.  I took the frame – and just about every other piece of scrap paper, old t-shirt and used up piece of camping gear that was left at his place.  What can I say – I’m sentimental.

Well, when my husband and I got married, the waterbed frame just didn’t fit as we tried to converge our two households.  I really did not want to let that thing go and he really did not want to ask me to do so.  Until one day, the light bulb went off and he set to work.  The next thing I knew, he had a beautifully sturdy bookshelf made with custom-sized shelves to fit our books.

I love that shelf and I didn’t have to part with my bed frame!

Waterbed Bookshelf

(I’ll post photos of it sometime when it isn’t so cluttered … one of these days, it won’t be so cluttered. I decided to stop kidding myself and just take a quick photo – it’s a huge mess, but it holds books!)

Oh this is awesome! I have a waterbed headboard that my Dad made for me that we are still using. I so many times want to change our decor but wouldn’t let go of my very special headboard.

If I were to convert it into a bookshelf I could always have it and possibly show it off better in the family room (I’ll get one someday) rather than keep it hidden in the bedroom. Thanks so much for the idea!!

Thanks for the make-do solution and sharing with us at Make-Do Mondays.

Oh, I love how he has repurposed something you treasured but couldn’t use into something you *can* use (and still treasure)! What a guy!

And of course I can totally relate to the need for more bookshelves. My daughter asked to go to the library book sale later this month, so perhaps you could send over your carpenter-husband to build a few shelves in advance?
