Works For Me Wednesday is hosted by WeAreTHATFamily!
Take a peek over there to see what lots of other families around the blogosphere say works for them!
I really like saving money on groceries! That’s why Angel Food “works for me”!
In a recent post, I highlighted the huge benefit my family is receiving from AngelFood Ministries. Their mission is “to provide food for friends and neighbors who were struggling financially”. They are certainly accomplishing that mission in our lives!
Because of the huge response I got from that article (okay, so I only got one comment! I’m not bitter), I decided to do a price comparison between AngelFood and WalMart to see just how much we were saving each month.
I chose WalMart because it seems that, in general, they have the least expensive prices. They have items they make lots of money on just like any other store, but overall, the brainwashing has worked on me … uh, I mean, overall they have the best prices.
Here is the AngelFood menu for July 2009 and my WalMart prices:
|Food Item||WalMart Price Notes||WalMart Price|
|1.5 lb. New York Strip Steaks (4 x 6 oz.)||8.99 per pound||$13.50|
|1.5 lb. Boneless Pork Roast||1.54 pound picnic||$2.31|
|2.28 pound sirloin (not sure what angelfood’s is)|
|1.5 lb. Lean Ground Beef||1.78 pound||$2.67|
|1 lb. Chicken Breast Fajita||$5.38|
|2 lb. Chicken Stir-Fry Skillet Meal||2.27 (with no chicken)||$3.27|
|(All-White Chicken, Lo Mein Noodles, Vegetables & Gourmet Teriyaki Sauce)||need to add can of chicken|
|12 oz. Deli Sliced Ham||$2.98|
|5 oz. Chunk Light Tuna in Water||$0.67|
|25 oz. Pasta Sauce||$1.12|
|1 lb. Pasta||$1.00|
|1 lb. Frozen Sliced Carrots||$0.96|
|12 ct. White Corn Tortillas||1.18 for 24ct||$0.59|
|4 ct. Fresh Large Baking Potatoes||1.28 each||$5.12|
|1 Fresh Fajita Veggie Kit||1.87 red, .94 green, 1.18 onion||$3.99|
|(Tray Pack – 1 each — Red Bell Pepper, Green Bell Pepper, Jumbo Yellow Onion)|
|1 ct. Fresh Cello-Wrapped Celery||$1.46|
|32 oz. 2% Shelf Stable Milk||1.66 one quart||$3.32|
As you can see by the grand total, AngelFood gives you the same amount of food for $22.64 less than WalMart. That is a savings of over 40%. Now, of course, this is without coupons and sales and deals. I have been known to save 70% or more on my grocery shopping trips.
But, AngelFood is doing the shopping for you! All I have to do is place my order ahead of time, show up at the pickup location on time, and drive away with my food. That definitely beats making a grocery shopping list and dragging yourself around the store to get the groceries, then waiting in line on top of it.
In order to feed my growing bunch (my boys are eating like hounds lately!) I buy two boxes from AngelFood and that lasts us a week solid with a few odd and ends throughout a few more days.
As I was grocery shopping, I was reminded about a few things to help save money on your groceries, outside of AngelFood.
- Did you know? At the WalMart closest to me, it is cheaper to buy two 5-pound bags of potatoes than to buy one 10-pound bag! So much for buying in bulk.
- Did you know? It is also cheaper to buy the shredded cheese at $0.20 per ounce than to buy the block of cheese at $0.23 per ounce! So much for not buying convenience foods.
I point these out to say that you really have to be careful before you assume that one thing is cheaper than another. It’s part of the reason that I did this price comparison with AngelFood. I figured it was cheaper, but it’s always good to check it out for yourself.
