Works For Me Wednesday is hosted by WeAreTHATFamily! After reading this article, go on over there and check out all the other great blog posts!
We just moved into a new home! It was LOTS of work and Florida is very HOT in July and August – but it was well worth it. We have a much larger home with a place for everything – I even have a linen closet and a bath towel closet! No more stuffing things in odd places because I have no idea where to put them!
A new home almost always means that some items will be put to new uses. It is sort of like putting together a jigsaw puzzle – finding the right piece for the right spot. I had lots of fun finding new uses for the things in my home and I thought I would share some ideas.
We have a refrigerator with filtered water and ice in the door!
*No more remembering to fill up the pitcher of water to chill for dinner.
*No more remembering to fill the ice cube trays.
It has been a real treat having this appliance to use! Except for the ice that falls all over the floor when we use the crushed ice. It makes a slippery mess which leads to a dirty mess when feet walk all over the water. So, I needed something to catch all that ice and water. Well, my entryway is set up a little differently so I didn’t need my shoe mat any more – so the boot tray is now an ice catcher. It has a little traction on it and a lip around the outer edge, so it can grab hold of the ice pieces as they fall and everything stays right on the mat. Then, I just rinse it off once in a while. No more cold ice to step on with bare feet!

Our master bedroom in the old place was quite small and the closets did not hold much. The clothing that should be folded and stored on a closet shelf had been in large clear bins on our floor – making a small room that much smaller. In the new place, our folded clothes fit in the closets, so the large bins needed to find a new purpose. We also now have a screened in porch so toys that used to float around from one place that didn’t work for me to another are now housed neatly in those bins out on the porch.

All of the closests in our old place were quite small, so we used lots of shelves for clothing. The closets in the new place hold most of the clothing, so I have been able to confiscate those shelves and put them to work in my new homeschooling room! I am probably the MOST excited about this room than anything else in the whole house. We’ll be able to keep all of our school stuff in one room instead of various places throughout the house. I also like the idea of doing all our work in one room and then being able to leave the room when we need a break and a change of scenery. Since the shleves used to hold clothing, which is pretty light, my husband will be reinforcing the shelves before I can go ahead and stack all our homeschooling materials on them. Once that is done, we’ll be able to unpack the last of the boxes from the move.

Do you need something in your home to make things run more smoothly or stay clean longer? Look around at the things you already use. You just might find exactly what you need – you won’t have had to spend anything except a little time and brain power!! Your budget will thank you.
