Recently, I reviewed a dress pattern for little girls from Sense and Sensibility for the Homeschool Crew. You can check that out here.
Since the dress is an apron-style that is open in the back, I needed some type of simple, white dress that would fit underneath the apron.

I made it in under one hour!! Anna and I did it together when the two younger ones were sleeping and I even had time to clean it all up!
I bought a white t-shirt from WalMart which was marked down to $2 – pretty good price for a brand new shirt. I also bought some white fabric and some pre-made ruffle. You could make the ruffle yourself which would make the dress a little less expensive but add on a bit more time.
I measured around Anna’s waist and cut a bit of extra fabric so that I could put in some gathers.
Then, sew the ruffle at the bottom.

Next, sew the seam of the skirt.
Cut the bottom hem off the t-shirt so you don’t have so much extra bulk when sewing on the skirt. Put the shirt on your model and pin the skirt at the right height.
Finally, sew the skirt in place.

Voila! Plain, white dress that will go under any kind of jumper or apron-style dress!! You could also find a different colored t-shirt and some pretty fabric and make a great dress to wear by itself.

Lest anyone think that I force my daughter to model for these photos! She wanted to make sure that I took a picture of the side – “because people will want to see that, too, Momma!”

“And, maybe they might like to see how it twirls. Can I twirl for the website, too?”

Of course, you can twirl my sweet little princess! I’d take a picture of you twirling any day!

That is so cute! I love the pink apron. Your ideas for the under-dress is very creative!

That’s a great idea for a quick white dress for underneath. I may just have to do that too, although I really want to make the one girl’s dress pattern they have on the site. Your version would give me a dress she could wear under it to church THIS Sunday though, and she’d love that.
