As parents, most of us are concerned about how our children will make a living once they grow up and leave our home.
As homeschoolers, it sets a little more heavily on our shoulders to make sure our children have the skills they need to be successful. On top of that, this present economy and job market makes it much more urgent that we truly prepare them to meet many obstacles.
One of the best areas to give them adequate skills is in the world of computers. Just a few tools and a little know-how could make a world of difference for them later in life. Just a little understanding of how to build a website could open so many doors for them.
“But, I don’t know much about computers and especially not websites! How would I teach my children about it all?”
“The topic is too hard and they are too young. I’ll wait until they are older.”
The review you are about to read will help you see that your kids CAN learn how to build a website and YOU can learn right along with them!

Brian Richardson with Click Drag Solutions presents
“Web Design For Kids (…And Curious Grown-Ups!)”
I love the subtitle on this instructional DVD! It helped me not feel silly for watching a kids video!
Your children will learn some basic html coding to make their own web pages and websites. By the end of this video, you can be sure your children will really know the information set before them. Brian does a wonderful job of bringing this to an easy-to-understand level. He seems very conversational – he doesn’t use big huge words or go too fast. He has a fun, upbeat attitude and makes it all feel like … well, child’s play!
The DVD is 1 hour and 22 minutes long. It may seem like a long time, but he breaks it down into bite-sized pieces. At the end of a lesson, the student could stop the DVD and start up again at another time. Some of the pieces of information that your children will come away with include:
- Ten Basic Lines of Code
- Sandwiches and Colors
- Make Subject Stand Out
- Stand Alone Tags
- Designing Backgrounds
- Fonts and Paragraphs
- Pictures
- Bonus Feature! (File Cabinet Management)
In the minds of many people, computers in general and websites in specific, are very complicated and scary. They just don’t feel like they are “smart enough” to learn how to do it. But, let me tell you – if (in my pre-kids life) I could run a computer department, program reports with medical data and deal with this website (with my husband’s help), ANYONE can do it!!
Here is a sample from the DVD so you can see for yourself:
I really enjoyed Brian’s easy-going approach to teaching what can be such a technologically hairy subject! Some of his ability is explained by the fact that he is a middle school computer literacy teacher. He spends his time with kids, teaching them about computers, talking with them about computers – he even said “Dude” on his website! He shares his high level of expertise both in the field of computers and the field of kids! To really illustrate his point, he developed and published his entire website using only Notepad and HTML!! A small percentage of the site was created using Javascript, but only about 5%. The rest of the pieces are things that your child will learn and can start utilizing immediately!
The age range of children who could really benefit from this DVD is from 8 to adult. As always, no matter what the age, the child needs to have a desire to learn the topic or nothing will stick. If your child is younger and really has a desire, it doesn’t hurt to let them view it. On the other hand, even if your child is in the right age group, if he or she doesn’t want to learn about building a webpage you might want to wait.
Overall, I think this is an extremely valuable resource for any child that would like to learn more about the computer world around them. They will certainly be better off for having had this information in their hands and in their heads.
