This week has been declared “Cleaning Tip” week!
There are SO many things that I clean and I certainly have a specific way to clean them – but when specifically called upon to share my “tips”, my mind goes blank. I fell like I should have some fabulous, never-before-heard-of, works every time tip for all the amazing bloggers that participate in WFMW.
Baking Soda.
It’s the universal cleaning tool. That much I can remember! It’s not glamorous and you’ve probably heard of it before, but I use it everywhere.
Here are some of the ways that I use baking soda around the house:
- Bath Tub – sprinkle baking soda generously around the tub (if it’s a little damp, the soda sticks better) then drizzle some vinegar on the soda. You could use a sprayer, but I just drip it from the container it comes in from the store. Let if fizzle a little while and then give it a good scrubbing.
- Kitchen Sink – use the same method to get your sink nice and shiny.
- Clogged Drain – pour 1 cup of soda down the drain and follow it up with 1 cup of hot water (heated in the microwave). Wait a while and flush with 2 cups of hot water.
- Whiter Whites – add 1/2 cup of soda to the load of whites in your washer and it will help brighten them up.
- Fabric Softener – add another 1/2 cup of soda to the rinse cycle to soften clothes instead of your regular fabric softener.
- Fresh Carpets – I mix up some baking soda and a few drops of essential oil, put them in a shaker and sprinkle the carpets with it before vacuuming.
I am quite sure that if you search online for more baking soda cleaning tips, you’ll find tons of them. These are the few that we’ve employed very successfully in our home.
Because baking soda works for me!

I love baking soda too! I didn’t know about using it for whiter whites or fabric softener. Thanks for the tips.
Great ideas!
I love using baking soda, the stuff is amazing!
I have recently been revitalizing the baking soda use in our house too.
I should try it out on our tub!

Thank you so much for the clogged drain tip! I’ve been reluctant to do anything about my clogged tub because I didn’t want to have to use harsh chemicals. Will be trying this tonight!
I love baking soda, too! As a drain cleaner, it works even better if you add vinegar in place of that first cup of hot water: The “science fair volcano” effect helps to break up the clog.
